Ideas on gesture

What is gesture?
Wikipedia defines gesture as:
"A gesture is a form of non-verbal communication made with a part of the body, used instead of or in combination with verbal communication. The language of gesture allows individuals to express a variety of feelings and thoughts, from contempt and hostility to approval and affection. Most people use gestures and body language in addition to words when they speak. The use of gesture as language by some ethnic groups is more common than in others, and the amount of such gesturing that is considered culturally acceptable varies from one location to the next."

A gesture can also be doing something, like a gesture of kindness. For example, you give your friend a hug when they’re having a bad day. OR you do something like plant a tree as a gesture of good will towards the planet. Of course, this could go the other way: you could perform a gesture of meanness by shoving your friend when they’re having a bad day. What kind of gesture would leaving a painting in the woods be? What about knitting a sleeve for a parking meter?

Some thoughts:
  • non-verbal communication
  • gesture drawing:

  • what is a gesture of kindness?
  • what can you communicate using gestures?
  • how can you react to a space using gesture?

Everybody!

Upload your video and original.

M/W: have both uploaded by Wednesday

T/TH: Video up today, original up by Thursday

Tyler Binsted

Tyler's sudden and tragic death was very upsetting to me. He was in 2 of my classes last year in AFO. I attended the vigil last night and it was very touching to see the incredible support from the community. I just wanted to let you all know my door and my arms are always open if anybody (current students, former students, colleagues) needs to talk.

T/TH artists

Geez, this is getting confusing with the 2 classes on different artists... Tuesday/Thursday class, these are the dancers to look up:
Martha Graham
Twyla Tharp
Mark Morris

Everybody!

The video assignment is the same for both classes, the wording is just slightly different in each of the posts below. Ultimately, you will have a 2 minute video that loops with both part 1 and part 2 edited together.

Mon/Wed this is for you

Ok, I might do this project with you guys. Above are my two possible originals... (Starn Twins)

Thursday, March 27, 2008

T/TH class this is for you

For Tuesday, come prepared to work on your video "set". Over the weekend, brainstorm on how to bring your inspiration art to life through video. Gather materials. Bring them to class on Tuesday.
Also, please post your 2 flipbook videos and flash video. Remember, you might have to export as quicktime, then open in iMovie, then re-export. Repeditive? Yes, I know.
Good luck with your portfolios, I hope all your dreams come true!

M/W Class this is for you

For Monday, come prepared to work on your video "set". This means bringing materials in to work on the background, figures, costumes, etc. If you can work and sit in line for portfolio reviews, you may do this during class. If you are not working, you WILL be counted absent!
Over the weekend, brainstorm, brainstorm, brainstorm about how to transform your inspiration artwork into your 1 minute video. Also, gather materials.

Please also post your quicktime files of your flipbooks and your flash animations to your blogs by Wednesday. You may have to bring your flash quicktime into iMovie and then re-export it as a smaller quicktime. Oh, so complicated... there's probably a more direct way, but this is a solution for now.

Don't forget to research your artists and find inspiration in them. (due Wed)

William Kentridge video

William Kentridge makes these pieces by drawing with charcoal and filming 2 seconds at a time to create stop-motion video. You could do something similar by drawing and scanning or photographing your drawing(s).

Flash Assignment

In at least 120 frames, explore one of the following grand themes in art:
1. Man verses Nature
2. Man verses Technology
3. Man verses Man

You may draw in Flash, you may import photographs, you may draw on paper, then scan, then import those files, anything you need to visually communicate one of the above themes.

You may want to research the themes as you are brainstorming to see what other artists have done under these themes.

M/W: due Wednesday, March 5
T/TH: due Thursday, March 6

Flip Books and Blogging!

Ok everybody, flipbooks are due at the beginning of class on Monday or Tuesday, depending on which section you're in! If you need glue over the weekend, it's called PVA glue and you can get it at Plaza or Main Art. Those sweet spring clamps can be found at Lowe's. Don't forget to use little pieces of mat board to protect your book while you clamp it.

Also, don't forget you need to post images of your collaborative photo project to your blog. Feel free to write about it if you want. I expect these images to be uploaded to your log by either Wednesday (MW class) or Thursday (T/Th Class).

Happy Valentine's Day!

Flip Book Info

EVERYBODY:
Two flipbooks:
1. Based somehow on Einstein's Dreams
2. Option: a) Show some sort of transformation, or b) give the idea of sound

Each flip book must be at least 50 pages. I wouldn't go much beyond 100, though, or it'll be hard to flip.

Paper ideas:
-index cards (no lines)
-cardstock (oooo, comes in colors!)
-heavy weight inkjet matte paper (good for any digital media or photos)
-photo paper (do you really want glossy? ...think fingerprints)

Remember not to try and sqeeze too much activity into what will amount to about 3 secs or less!

Also remember to keep your composition towards the outside of your book so it doesn't get lost in the crease of the book.

New Deadlines:
M/W: Both completed books are due on Monday, February 18th

T/TH: Both completed books are due on Tuesday, February 19th

Over the weekend, finish all the pages for one book. On Monday and Tuesday, we'll have a binding demo and we'll visit the graphics lab (yay!)
